The material

Easier to work. Built to last.

“Green oak is oak that hasn’t been dried yet — softer under the tool, and durable enough to leave outside without a drop of treatment.”

Fresh sawn oak still holds its natural moisture, which makes it markedly easier to saw, split, carve and shape than seasoned stock. Hand tools cut cleanly through it. That is why traditional timber framing has always been done in green oak rather than dry.

It is also tough where it counts. Oak’s dense grain and high tannin content resist moisture, decay and insect attack even while green — which is why it has been trusted for centuries in outdoor structures, barrels and boatbuilding, and why it needs no chemical treatment to sit outside.

Why framers ask for it green

Green oak shrinks as it dries, and good carpenters use that. Mortise-and-tenon joints cut in fresh oak tighten on themselves over the following seasons, so the frame ends up mechanically stronger than the day it was raised.

Prices are confirmed on your digital quote. Need random widths, waney edge or something unusual? Send your list over and we’ll price it.

The m³ shown is the exact volume of the sizes you’ve entered. Your timber is cut for the best yield from the material we hold, so the volume we supply is normally a little over that figure — your quote confirms what we’ll supply.

No minimum order value, and delivery is free across our region. We prioritise by order value, so once your order is ready most go out within two working days, and smaller orders are typically with you inside seven. Machined and cut-to-order items carry their own lead time, confirmed on your quote.

Fresh sawn

Oak cladding.

Two profiles, both sawn from the same green oak. Priced on your quote once we know the area.

Waney edge oak cladding on a building elevation, live edges visible

Waney Edge Oak

Boards left with their natural edge, so the outline of the tree stays in the wall. Overlapped horizontally for a soft, traditional elevation.

“Waney” means the board keeps the live, irregular edge of the log rather than being sawn straight — so no two boards are quite the same.

Feather edge oak cladding shot along the boards showing the taper

Feather Edge Oak

Tapered boards that overlap to shed water cleanly. Crisper and more regular than waney edge, and the usual choice where a tidy line matters.

Each board is sawn as a wedge — around 25mm at the thick edge down to about 5mm at the thin one — so boards lap over each other and throw water clear.

Good to know

How green oak behaves.

None of this is a fault — it is what fresh sawn oak does, and worth planning for.

It shrinks

Oak loses moisture and moves as it dries. Frames are cut with that in mind; joints tighten rather than loosen.

It silvers

Left outside, the warm honey colour weathers to silver-grey over a season or two. Many people choose it for exactly that.

It may check

Fine surface splits along the grain are normal as beams dry, and do not affect structural strength.

It can stain

Tannin reacts with iron and with damp masonry. Use stainless or galvanised fixings and let it run clear.
