Heartwood ranges from pale brown to dark chocolate with darker streaks, sometimes with a grey, purple or reddish cast; sapwood is near-white. Figured grain — curl, crotch and burl — is common. Grain is usually straight but can be irregular, with medium texture and a moderate natural lustre.
