Colour runs from pale yellow-brown to biscuit with a pinkish hue, very like European oak, with straight grain and the characteristic silver figure on quartered material. Slow- grown Appalachian oak is light and mild; faster-grown southern oak is harder and tougher. Medium to coarse texture, ≈760 kg/m³.
Furniture and cabinetmaking, joinery, heavy construction, parquet and strip flooring, pews and pulpits, boatbuilding, ladder rungs and tight cooperage. Rotary-cut for plywood and sliced for highly ornamental panelling veneers.
