Wood is treated with acetic anhydride, converting the free hydroxyls that would otherwise take up water. Acetylation works through the full thickness rather than coating the surface, so the properties are the same at the core and are not lost when a board is cut or planed.
External joinery where movement cannot be tolerated — windows, doors and curtain walling — plus cladding, decking, louvres, bridges and garden structures. Use stainless steel fixings: the residual acetic content will corrode ordinary steel.
